from the pdf EoC Report 2016 (2.11 MB) on the "Economy of Communion - A New Culture" - Editorial insert of Città Nuova n.2/2017 - february 2017
This report of the year 2016 is being published in the days when the operators of the Economy of Communion from all over the world gather in Rome to meet Pope Francis. They will have the opportunity to offer the following things to the Holy Father: the operational business parks in Europe and Latin America, the life of communion of the workers of more than eight hundred companies, the support provided to thousands of poor people, schooling for their children, the associations that organise trainings and support networks for new companies and young entrepreneurs, the productive and social projects as well as the support for the university of the culture of unity and the dialogue with contemporary culture.
In today’s world, globalization presents to us significant challenges such as poverty, inequality, unemployment, and forced migration… All these situations make us question if this is the world we want and if the economy can change for the better.
The Economy of Communion project (EOC) offers a new perspective facing these challenges: a new business culture where free enterprises become the cradle of a culture of giving, that fosters fraternity, social bonds, sustainability, and communion, rather than individualism and profit as an end in itself.

This multidisciplinary Summer School will reflect on ‘economy’ and ‘communion’, two words that are frequently perceived as being very distant from each other both in academic literature and applied sciences. The primary proposal and challenge behind this Summer School, therefore, is precisely to generate the space to examine these terms together and to focus on their interplay: an ‘economy of communion’.

"When he brought the ready drink to Jeremiah's bedside, he was breathing quietly in his sleep. "Since I cannot hide it from the world, how can I hide it from you?" ..."Hide what?" (...). "The Lord was with me... And his voice spoke to me. And his voice is sending me away from here." Abi's eyes filled with tears. She did not cry because the Lord had come to him. Shouldn't she be proud of all the women of Jacob? And yet Abi's heart broke with sorrow for the election of her son."
Franz Werfel, Hearken Unto the Voice
There is a conflict, a radical tension, between the prophets and power. For many reasons, but above all because the prophet, by his task and vocation, can see the natural tendency of every power - above all the one dressed in a sacred mantle - getting distorted and turning into tyranny.

It's not easy to describe Carmen. If I had to pick one word, it would be "cyclone". Wherever she showed up she revolutionized everything ... And she managed to be everywhere: at the birthday of the bishop's mother, in the field, in the Federation of Argentinean Businessmen, in the EoC meetings... She was interested in everything and she wanted to record everything. She never gave up until she managed to keep going.

Hear, you that love,
You that yearn,
In your eyes’ desire our life begins,
In your hands our breakthrough, to the blue air –
We’re there in the smell of the dawn.
Already you’re breathing us in,
We enter your sleep,
Strike root in the dream-soil.
Then nurtures our growth, till
Our eyes open to yours.
And we cry.
Nelly Sachs In the Dwellings of Death (Chorus of the Unborn - English translation by Andrew Shanks)
Prophecy is one of the capital goods at all times and everywhere - for every society, for all communities, for every person. Therefore, when the big crises strike, prophecy becomes a primary necessity, precious and essential, just like water or respect.
Enzo Morandi "Volo", (in Italian: "flight" or "I fly" - the tr.), one of the first focolarini, was co-responsible of the Brazilian Focolare Community with Ginetta Calliari when Chiara Lubich launched the Economy of Communion in Brazil in 1991. He played a key role in the birth and development of the EoC from the beginning. He was a technician, an industrial expert, and had a very concrete look on the world and on the economy. He loved the EoC very much and we loved him. I knew him well, also during the last few years when he came to the Centre of the Movement to continue to serve it. We thank him for his life he donated, and we entrust him with the present and the future of the EoC: may it grow to be beautiful, free, simple, concrete, sober, just as Volo was. Between heaven and earth.
